Reinforcing Food Stamp Prejudice

Myths and prejudice about food stamp (SNAP) recipients received front-page reinforcement in the New York Times recently, in an article and photo telling us that SNAP recipients purchase “a lot of soda”—https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/13/well/eat/food-stamp-snap-soda.html.  But it took a diligent reporter to investigate the USDA report behind the article and show from that same report that the level of sweet drinks purchased by SNAP recipients is not significantly different from the shopping patterns of non-SNAP recipients!  Here is an important counter to the front-page story:
