The SoLA Food Co-op is in the beginning phases of forming itself into a viable cooperatively organized business. Its goal is to create a source for natural, organic, non-GMO food in South Los Angeles.

As a co-op, we are much more than just another natural foods store—we’re actually owned by our local community. Unlike the national chain stores, we exist to serve you, our owners—not a distant corporate board.

Because we’re truly local, owning a piece of your co-op is really about owning a piece of your community.

Grassroots Local Market is a cooperatively-owned grocery store in Downtown Lynchburg, Virginia. Grassroots is currently in the funding stage, having raised over $300,000 of the $400,000 needed to open the store. Our goal is to strengthen the downtown by forming a community owned and governed full-service natural foods store. We want to solve several downtown and greater Lynchburg needs with one effort: create a full-service grocery; provide a one-stop shop for natural, organic, and local foods; help relieve the downtown food desert and improve the vitality of the downtown.

We trace our roots to 2012, when meetings were held to discuss the idea of a food co-op in Bay City. A Facebook page was started, but ultimately the group foundered.

Others, still interested, picked up the idea in spring 2014 and began holding monthly meetings. As many as a dozen people turned out. The low point may have been one summer evening when three people showed up. But from there, four people formed a steering committee and moved forward.
