Many food co-ops offer classes and special events, either free or at a modest cost. Here is what's happening at Brattleboro Food Co-op in August, 2016, as publicized in the local paper, the Brattleboro Reformer.

Free lunchtime yoga for co-op shareholders: An inspiring, all-levels yoga class, led by a different local teacher each week. Bring a yoga mat. First come, first serve (space is limited). Kidsplayce healthy snack and story time: Come to Kidsplayce in downtown Brattleboro, where a story (or a few) will be read and a healthy snack will be made, together with a Brattleboro Food Co-op volunteer. Every Friday, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Free and open participation during the Co-op hour, but Kidsplayce fees apply for play. 20 Elliot St. Call 802-254-5212 or email[email protected].

Free tasting: True North Granola: Stop by and meet Ingrid and Frankiln, and taste their granola. Friday, Aug. 5, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free, in the store.

Free tasting: Gallery Walk sampling: Stop by and enjoy free samples throughout the Brattleboro Food Co-op during Gallery Walk. Friday, Aug. 5, 4 to 6 p.m. Free.

Free kids class — garden fun: Come help plant, weed, plan, and water the herbs and flowers in the BFC Whetstone Café Patio Garden. Bring gloves and waterproof boots. Tuesday, Aug. 9, 3:30 to 5 p.m. Brattleboro Food Co-op Café Patio Garden. Free, but registration requested at 802-246-2821 or [email protected].

Free kids cooking class — salsa and salsa:Celebrate the Harvest of the Month vegetable — tomatoes — by making homemade salsa using fresh ingredients grown by Jonah Mossberg, with a little salsa music for inspiration. Thursday, Aug. 11, 10 to 11:30 a.m., in the Brattleboro Food Co-op Cooking Classroom. $7 for BFC shareholders/$10 non-shareholders. Registration requested at 802-246-2821 or[email protected].

Free tasting — wine and appetizers:Sample wines from the Co-ops large selection paired with delicious appetizers during Gallery Walk. Free to patrons over 21 with a valid ID Friday, Aug. 12, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Free kids class — kids' science explorers club: Guided by artist and environmental activist Danielle Baudrand from the "Plastic Bag Project," kids will explore technology, art, science and activism in this summer club meeting Aug. 13 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. There will also be a nourishing snack along the way. Free class — winning herbal strategies: Find powerful strategies to improve memory, focus, attention, test scores, and overall quality of life for children and adults with ADD, learning and behavioral challenges. You'll learn about many healing foods and herbal remedies to nourish and detoxify your brain. Safe, sensible options for your children and entire family. Cold brew coffee 101: Learn about cold brew coffee, how to make it, the benefits of drinking it, recipes, and history. Erik, from Mocha Joe's, will show the way. Movie: "WALL-E" is a delightful animated film that is appropriate for children and adults alike. Imaginative and fun, this film also inspires contemplation of our lifestyle and impact on the environment. Presented by Mindful Monday. Snacks will be served at 5:30 and the film begins promptly at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, in the Brattleboro Food Co-op Community Room. $5 suggested donation. PlantPure demo and potluck: Bring a totally plant-based dish to share (no meat, fish, dairy, eggs, or honey), and, if possible, a place setting to reduce waste, to the Brattleboro Food Co-op Community Room on Wednesday, Aug. 24, starting at 6 p.m. Free, but registration required at 802-246-2821 or [email protected].

"Make It and Take It" PlantPure cooking class: Learn how to make watermelon cucumber gazpacho. If possible, bring your favorite chef's knife. And if you'd like to take home a full quart of gazpacho, please bring a small cucumber, a red bell pepper, yellow bell pepper, small jalapeno pepper, and a quart jar.
