Ten Ways to Democratize the Economy

The Democracy Collaborative continues to issue valuable summaries of current efforts to build economic institutions and policies that will serve communities in a democratic manner.  Gar Alperovitz and Keene Bhatt recently offered a fine summary, “What Then Must I Do? Ten Ways to Democratize the Economy,” at the Truthout website:  http://truth-out.org/opinion/item/18908-what-then-can-i-do-ten-steps-toward-transforming-the-system

This is an impressive and encouraging survey of local efforts that range from community development corporations and land trusts that support local enterprise and stable, affordable housing; redirecting funds credit unions and enabling credit unions to have more local impact; forming worker-owned enterprise and democratic decision-making; redirecting institutional financial holdings to address local needs; and much more.
