Hi everyone ---

This looks pretty much like email... and perhaps not unlike Basecamp.  I just successfully uploaded a file to the library and thought I'd see what happens by starting a discussion.

I may actually have some time today to review our board packet!

Thank you everyone for completing the survey, the basic data we will be using for Danny's review.  More on that later.

Here's looking forward to some warm, sunny weather.

Jane

Here is a sample discussion culled from the listserves:

Hi, we've applied for our beer & wine license and our grocery manager is starting to plan our section. I am writing to request information to help him with that. If you're willing, please share:

• number of retail linear feet of beer & wine you stock
• total retail square feet and retail linear feet
• your beer and wine buyer's contact info

Thanks!

Doug's face Apr 11 2013 - 2:52pm

Hi all. The Marketing and Membership group has had a hunger for Jen at New Pi's Guidelines for Social Media. This amused Jen a little, because the document predates Pinterest and 4Square. I know that there are some co-op users of Pinterest out there, but I'm not one.

Now, I want to provide a link to a document that's already in the CGN Library. Instead of using the "Choose File" button, I'm opening another tab and searching the library for the keywords "social media" -- third hit is a link: http://www.cooperativegrocer.coop/library/documents/39012

See what you think of it (a .doc file).  directly download with this link

Let's just get this one out of the way and dealt with, so we don't have to talk about it any more..... We play reggae almost all of the time, except for brief periods of Grateful Dead jam sessions. On Sundays, we restrict the music played to just Chinese opera, and so far, it has successfully kept our business down to a bare minimum of die-hard aficionados... During any holiday, we play nothing but traditional holiday music. "Grandma got run over by a reindeer" is our favorite. Our staff get to pick and choose what music gets played, because they are here all of the time, and have to suffer through all of this. Interestingly enough, this is the music that they have selected... What kind of music do y'all play?

Hi everyone, Allison from Seward Co-op here to wish you happy wintery Friday in MN! Setting up my account, uploading a profile image and linking to my personal social media pages was smooth as silk. The next thing I'd like to do is make some updates to Seward's page: http://www.cooperativegrocer.coop/coops/seward-co-op-grocery-deli Am I able to do that, or should I list the changes for CGN admin? (Specifically, I hope to change the business name - we've recently dropped the "grocery & deli" and embraced "Seward Community Co-op" instead.) Have a great weekend.

Hi test group! Question for you: do you like seeing the Recent Activity section first and then the Recent Discussions, or would you like to see the two reversed? There is a maximum of eight items that can be listed for Recent Activity, so it won't get any longer. But I sometimes get annoyed that I have to scroll down to get to the discussions. Maybe it can be formatted to be side by side in narrower columns ... Thoughts? Thanks! Heewon

Howdy! This may be a question/concern for Dan N and Heewon, but as we are charged with testing the site, I thought I would relate my feedback on today's search for other co-op's personnel policies on PTO, and the amount that they allow to carry over. When I finally found the HR section in the Library, and got into the actual listing of available items, all of them are tagged as if they were contributed by 14 Carrots Co-ops or 4th Street Food Co-op, and otherwise, there is no attribution as to which co-op actually was responsible for creation. There are dates, which is sort of helpful, but I would rather know if something came from Wheatsville, or Blue Hill, because I know how large/small those co-ops are. A whole list of docs labeled "Personnel Policies" with just a date means I will have to open up each one, and see if I can open it up and read what co-op actually wrote it. Numerous times, when you get to the page where the file should be, there was nothing, just a link back to where I had just been... I realize this is not "live" yet, but as the original CGIN site is now saying that it will not be available for much longer, and to come over to this iteration, it's a tad frustrating to have to work harder to find things than we used to with the old site....

Hello Ellen Michel,

Hurrah! Thanks for participating in CGN Space Discussions.

There are three ways you can create a NEW DISCUSSION via email in CGN Staff - Space Only:

With each option, the subject line becomes the title of the discussion and the body will be the content. Please strip out any other text from the email, including your signature. Your name and CGN Site & Notification Signature will automatically be added. (So, please go to Edit Account Settings and enter that in Profile Info).

1. Reply to this email: Change the subject line. Delete all content and enter message on a blank page.

2. Create a new email by clicking this mailto link: [email protected] <mailto:CGN Staff:Space Only<[email protected]>>. Enter a subject and enter message on a blank page.

3. Save this new email address as a contact in your address book and create a new email. The “send to” address created above is the "contact address" of your CGN Space. You should be able to simply start typing the name as you would any other contact in a new email.

I wanted to let you know something cool about the new site. I've said it before, but it takes some getting used to, as you play with the site (please do!) and share stuff.

You know how CGN has long had a Library? Remember, way back before Pinterest and Instagram and all that good social media brouhaha, how you used to upload images and documents to the old CGN site, back in the day? I remember adding lots of photos of the Garden Center at Bloomingfoods, where I was the Marketing Manager at the time. Someone had asked: Do any co-ops out there sell plants for the garden?

The same thing happens here, but it's now easier and more searchable. Here, for example, is a piece I wrote for Cooperative Grocer magazine an issue or two ago. That lives on in our archive, sure. And you can download a PDF to do a bit of reading about CGN. It's a good piece for all of you Account Managers to download these days and pass along to your general manager, staff, and board—so they can learn more about what's new to this platform.

All that's to say that YOU can upload files, too, adding them to our Library! Be sure to include any attributions that are a good courtesy, crediting the writer, designer or photogragher. Give your file a name that is easily searchable and descriptive of the contents (Member Brochure 2015 Fresh Foods Co-op, for example).

I'm looking forward to a great big display table here....with co-op docs on the download!

Here's to a great week in Co+oplandia.

Hi Dan!

I wanted to upload a couple of vertical format photos, and notice that the site wants to add them as horizontal (even though they are portrait on my computer). I'm going to try it here, for you to see. Is there a way that people can rotate them? Also, should we provide some size guidelines on these?

Later: I edited the photo to make it smaller and that fixed the positioning issue. Another question, though. On the page my message appears (Recent Activity) the photo doesn't appear. I do see it on the right on the page where I wrote the message. But how does it appear to other Space members?

Also, I noticed that Images don't appear to be searchable, at least they are not listed on the left when you do a search. I tried searching "How to Shop" (the name of the photo) and didn't get any results. How are images archived and recovered on the site?

Re: the inquiry from Doug: Hi — this is a wiki page, but I don’t see a button to edit it. The only drop-down item on the “gear” menu (upper right) is “follow.” It isn’t a wiki if it can’t be edited, correct? So… I am confused.

My reply: Hi Doug,Thanks for the feedback. As I understand this (and Dan, correct me if I'm wrong), this is something you would "edit" not by going into the original document and changing it (which could result in many unfelicitous "corrections") but by creating something else that is searchable in relation to the topic, a new thread called "Co-op Principles, from my perspective" (for example). These are all searchable by the keywords "Co-op Principles" and come up (as the three pieces do here) in a search, so viewers can browse among the entries.

Dan, once you weigh in, we can think about what language we should use to explain the "wikis"—personally, I'm not always happy with the term, as I associate it with Wikipedia and the editing protocols that happen there—and which I'd prefer we avoid, using the system described above instead. That way, you see who adds their perspective, and when, around a common topic or theme.
In other words, Doug, you can create a new Discussion called "Cooperative Principles, November 2015" and refer back to anything else around that topic (if you wish), saying whatever you wish to add. That entry will go out to viewers and be archived as part of the collection. You can also "Follow" the thread, using that option under the gear menu.
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Let's think about doing some editing to the Wiki page library page. Looking around there tonight, I found a request to forward info to the CGN office, but the link went to a "File Not Found" page:

Hi — this is a wiki page, but I don’t see a button to edit it. The only drop-down item on the “gear” menu (upper right) is “follow.” It isn’t a wiki if it can’t be edited, correct? So… I am confused.√Hi — this is a wiki page, but I don’t see a button to edit it. The only drop-down item on the “gear” menu (upper right) is “follow.” It isn’t a wiki if it can’t be edited, correct? Hi All,

Our retail support team has been thinking about charging for paper bags. We do not have plastic bags and currently provide a $.10 refund for each reusable bag a customer brings. That refund can be donated to the local organization of the month or kept by patrons. This system of rewarding customers for bringing their own bags has been great, but with prices continuing to increase we thought we'd reach out to all of you fine folks for feedback.

Have any of you switched to charging for bags recently? If so, can you share pros/cons and benefits/problems with the transition? Also, any information on how you went about making the change (in terms of publicity, building good will, etc.) would be helpful. I was able to find Chico's report from 2012 which is helpful, but the more experiences we can glean from, the better. Also, if anyone from Chico has anything to add to the 2012 update I'd love to hear it!

Thanks in advance for your cooperation and support!

Misty Amarena

Dear Account Managers,

It's time to vote in the CGN Annual Board Election. We have three people on the ballot this year: Annie Hoy, our current president (from Ashland Food Co-op in Ashland, Oregon) and Eric Struve (IT from Outpost Natural Foods in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) are up for re-election to 3-year terms on the board. Erika Gavin, Art Director at Hanover Co-op Food Stores in Vermont and New Hampshire is also running, for a first term on the board. We have three open seats in this election.

Please download your ballot from link below to read more from the candidates and learn more about CGN. We also welcome Bella Waters to the board. She has been appointed to fill a position recently vacated by Marc BrownGold. Many of you know Bella from her previous work as the Operations Manager of CGN, working with Karen Zimbelman. We are grateful to Bella for stepping up to fill this board-appointed position, until our next election cycle.

If your co-op is in good standing with CGN, having paid 2015 dues, you are eligible to vote in the election. If you are receiving this message but are no longer the person who represents your co-op on CGN, please pass it along to the person in that role now and/or to your general manager. Shoot me an email, too, so that we can keep our roster current.

Thank you for your participation in this election, and in CGN!

Dear Cooperative Colleague,

We are excited to announce that CCMA 2017 will take place June 8-10, 2017at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Minneapolis, Minnesota, hosted by the Twin Cities area food cooperatives. Conference details and lodging information can be found at: www.ccma2017.com.

This year’s CCMA theme, Our North Star: Cooperate to Differentiate, is inspired by Minnesota’s state motto “L’etoile du Nord” or Star of the North. Throughout history, the North Star has been a symbol of guidance, dependability and reassurance. In U.S. history, the North Star was an important symbol for the pathway to freedom for African-American slaves. The popular song, “Follow the Drinking Gourd” was actually a code of directions for traveling north, using the “drinking gourd," or Big Dipper, a constellation that includes the North Star.

Just as the North Star is the brightest and the point around which the entire northern sky turns, food cooperatives rely on the principles of cooperation for guidance in an ever-changing, and often troubling, world.

As cooperatives, we are committed to building vibrant, inclusive communities and a healthier planet.  In an environment of increased market competition, shrinking margins and rising costs, we must demonstrate our commitment to the values that guide us and differentiate us.

Call for Proposals

The University of Wisconsin Center for Cooperatives (UWCC) is seeking proposals for break-out sessions through February 3, 2017. Please read the attached Call for Proposals document for information on track topics, submission guidelines, and selection criteria.

Please pass along this announcement to your networks and colleagues.

We look forward to seeing your proposals!
