Merger Saves Anoka Co-op, Expands Lakewinds July 27, 2010 - 11:39 am EDT About one year ago, the president of the board of Anoka Co-op contacted Twin Cities Natural Food Co-ops looking for assistance with a struggling co-op. Although Anoka Co-op had reached its milestone 25th anniversary, sales were at nearly the same level as ten years earlier. The fiscal year end sales of $625,000 reflected a ten percent drop from the previous year. The facility was small (2,300 square feet of retail space) and outdated, equipment was inadequate, and the co-op was faced with health department citations for code violations.

Well over three hundred directors, managers, trainers, and other cooperators met at the 2001 Consumer Cooperative Management Association (CCMA) conference under the theme, "Velocity of Cooperation." Food co-ops intensified their sector's training and development efforts, accelerating a trend of closer collaboration and rapid development of national programs.

The National Cooperative Grocers Association board of directors met recently to build a framework and long-term vision for the organization, as we move into our second full year of operation in 2001. Using the principles of policy governance, the NCGA board crafted some draft "Ends statements" to define what they would like the organization to accomplish in coming years.

In March 2002, hundreds of thousands of co-op consumers will receive a full-color flyer filled with dozens of product specials negotiated through the national expansion of CAP, the Co-op Advantage Program.
