The next National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) meeting will be held October 22-24, 2003 in Washington, D.C. (around the time this article is published). This time the agenda for the meeting has a definite theme-one that should not be taken lightly. The public is being asked to comment on how the NOSB will interpret one of the criteria it is required to use when evaluating a material for placement on the National List.

Davis Co-op and Community Get Together for a Blood Drive July 27, 2010 - 11:39 am EDT

When I think of the Davis Food Co-op, naturally some of the first things that come to mind are the delicious foods and environmentally sound products I buy there. But I also see the co-op as a crucial supporter of the Davis community, since it seeks to address public needs in many ways--for example, it contributes grants to local agencies via the Davis Cooperative Community Fund.

This impression has been more firmly cemented since I received the newly approved Ends Policies of the co-op board of directors, which clearly states, "We are enriched by the community we make."

Creative Solutions Bring New Look to Dated Store July 27, 2010 - 11:39 am EDT

October Is Co-op Month July 27, 2010 - 11:39 am EDT Cooperatives nationwide will highlight their economic and charitable contributions to their communities as part of the annual October marking of Co-op Month.

The community theme was selected for the annual celebration in light of a substantial current focus on the state of the economy. “Co-ops care about their communities,” said Roger Eldridge of the National Milk Producers Federation, chair of the National Co-op Month Planning Committee for 2004. “That gives them a different perspective from businesses owned by distant investors.”

New @ CGIN July 27, 2010 - 11:39 am EDT

This year’s CCMA conference once again afforded CGIN (Cooperative Grocer’s Information Network) the chance to hold its annual meeting and report on its activities to members. This was CGIN’s eighth annual meeting, and we continued our tradition of taking pledges for items or scholarship contributions from members. And, reflecting their generous nature and tradition, CGIN members came through.

Down the Drain? July 27, 2010 - 11:39 am EDT

In May 2003, the National Organic Program announced a broadening of the scope of organic certification. Richard Mathews, at the National Organic Standards Board meeting, told attendees that included in that organic scope were cosmetics and personal care items, pet food, dietary supplements, textiles, and fish.

Farm Aid 2005 July 27, 2010 - 11:39 am EDT

On Sept. 17, with Farm Aid 2005 ready to go the next day, the Chicago Tribune ran a story claiming that Farm Aid does not apply significant funds to really help family farmers. The folks at Farm Aid were outraged, as is this reporter. I have been involved with Farm Aid since 1990. I can tell you from personal experience that Farm Aid does help family farmers to save their farms. I invite the Tribune to interview me the next time they try to slam this wonderful organization.

Outpost Co-op Opens Third Milwaukee-Area Store July 27, 2010 - 11:39 am EDT

Kinnickinnic Avenue runs a diagonal path through the Bay View neighborhood of south side Milwaukee, Wis. It is an urban trek through an older, established, working-class community that is fast becoming the hot new eclectic place to live affordably. This main street is home to a lively mix of independent retailers—and now, Outpost Natural Foods Cooperative.

Growing Local and National Cooperative Communities July 27, 2010 - 11:39 am EDT

The National Cooperative Grocers Association (NCGA) ended 2005 with—what else—lots of change! This seems to be our organizational hallmark. However, despite the challenges of a rapidly growing organization we are steadily progressing toward the objectives identified through the reorganization process of the past two years. NCGA achieved some clear successes last year; it still has some clear opportunities for improvement; and, from my vantage point in a new position, the organization has launched a busy start to a new year.

Will you attend the 50th annual Consumer Cooperative Management Association conference June 8–10 in Atlanta?
