Set against the backdrop of turmoil in America’s food system, Drift, a thriller about GMOs (genetically modified organisms), has been written by Jon McGoran, a longtime Weavers Way Co-op communications director and occasional contributor to Cooperative Grocer. Published by Forge Books earlier this year, Drift combines an action-filled storyline with strong concerns about GMOs in the food supply. McGoran left Weavers Way after 30 years in March to become editor in chief at Grid, a monthly magazine covering issues of sustainability with a focus in Philade |

"Operating at Cost" -- or Democratic Control? | December 24, 2010 - 11:44 am EST |
Take note of the recently announced campaign by the National Cooperative Business Association, promoting co-ops as "not for profit" and "operating at cost." In the Cooperative Business Journal, President & CEO Russ Notar presents this response to arguments that co-ops are unfairly escaping taxes on their earnings. But I worry that this campaign conveys the wrong message. Here's Notar: |

"We Live In A Political World" | November 3, 2010 - 3:34 pm EDT |
For many of us, pursuing careers in cooperatives is a means of applying, through the institutions we build by our daily work, principles that evoke a world of social justice. Perhaps -- in the midst of worrying about managing your cash flow, merchandising the latest product addition, or learning to be an effective board member -- that cooperative vision is hard to remember or be inspired by. Perhaps my calling it a vision of social justice seems overly abstract or even embarassingly idealistic. |

"We Need You to Be Successful" | November 3, 2010 - 3:36 pm EDT |
UNFI has the financial strength and buying power to serve all channels of this industry and to compete with the conventional wholesalers who will try and get into this business. Because the core natural customers are the majority of our business, we will continue to focus on our core natural customer. Because we are focused on selling natural and organic foods, we will fight to maintain integrity in our organic standards, eliminating GMOs from our food supply, and pushing for ways of doing business that protect the environment. |

"Your flag decal won't get you into heaven anymore." | November 3, 2010 - 3:40 pm EDT |
Better co-op stores and stronger regional and national co-op associations are gratifying results based on years of groundwork. Each year the reports of the Cooperative Grocers Associations and their national programs have been impressive, each year more developed and rewarding. Great results from intensive groundwork also describes the newly launched .coop Internet address, which signifies internationally the shared values and principles of cooperatives (see p. 3). As a recent announcement from our national co-op trade organization explained: |

We in the Valley may have an above-average awareness of food co-ops. Take a Sunday drive around Western Mass, and you’ll find co-ops dotting the landscape, serving local communities and offering an alternative to the big box grocery chains that might not find it profitable to serve some smaller towns at all. But even the savviest of co-op members might be surprised by Steve Alves new documentary about the phenomenon. |
