Food Front Cooperative Grocery has been serving our 14,000 menbers and the local community of Portland since 1972. We operate two locations and employ over 70 brilliant people. We are looking for one more brillaint and tallented individual to oversee the meat department at our Hillsdale store. 


Provides top quality product selection at all times in accordance with member needs and the co-op ends policies.  Responsible for the attainment of positive operating results, including department staffing, sales, inventory, shrink and margins, daily operations of department. Provides a safe, attractive, and efficient department, and well-trained employees who provide excellent customer service. The position reports to the Store Manager.


Principle Responsibilities:

  •  Responsible for maintenance of Meat/Seafood department in a clean, attractive manner. Accountable for design and maintenance of attractive displays. Develops and implements effective promotional programs.
  • Through own initiative and through department buyers, identifies appropriate product mix and inventory levels to achieve sales and margin goals and satisfy customer demand emphasizing local, organic, sustainable products. Encourages buyers to continually source new suppliers and maintain positive relationships with current suppliers to meet customer demand and store ends.
  • Develops and implements long- and short-term goals with Store Manager’s approval to ensure department success.
  • Maintains department cost efficiency by monitoring product pricing, and managing labor hours, sales, margins, and shrink within budget parameters.
  • Supervises Meat/Seafood staff directly to include employee selection, training, scheduling, motivation and performance evaluation. Ensures that Meat/Seafood staff are aware of and adhere to store and department policies and expectations.
  • Sources, orders and receives product according to guidelines ensuring that all invoices are coded accurately and submitted to bookkeeping in a timely fashion.
  • Keeps abreast of changes in industry standards and requirements. Implements and adheres to all required store and health department standards.  This may include adopting standards above those legally required if they are in alignment with the ends of the co-op.
  • Active member of management team coordinating Meat/Seafood Dept. activities to meet store needs.
  • Performs clerk and lead functions as required to cover all shifts.
  • Maintains department in a clean, attractive manner implementing and adhering to all required safety and sanitation standards.
  • Responsible to ensure that the department provides informed, professional, and outstanding customer service to all members/customers and co-workers.


Demands/Complexity This position involves a high degree of complexity (micromanagement of product; highest perishable department in the store – 3-day shelf life; ordering a substantial number of days out for next delivery; supervision of staff). There is a wide diversity of work situations and the incumbent operates independently with minimal supervision. Policy constraints guide most decision making, but some decisions are made within broad interpretation of applicable laws and governmental guidelines. Generally determines own practices and procedures. Contributes to the development of new concepts. Position is responsible for department’s long-range strategic and operational planning.


Work is verified only in broad terms through sales, labor hour, and margin reports, customer feedback, and staff issues. Errors (improper ordering, low/heavy production) have a direct impact on store sales and profitability as evidenced by increased shrink, poor margin, loss of customers, employee relations problems, and overall degradation of store integrity.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY Job includes full supervisory responsibilities including providing daily work direction, approval of absences and overtime, scheduling, and recommendations and/or approval regarding hiring, performance evaluation, discipline, terminations, pay changes, or job changes. Incumbent supervises staff of 5-10 year-round, consisting of an Assistant Manager, a Lead, and several Clerks.


Contacts With Others Contacts are generally made on incumbent’s initiative and are both inside and outside the store (mainly with own department staff and own supervisor, but often with other departments/locations). Contacts frequently contain confidential/sensitive information necessitating discretion at all times.


Specific Job Skills:

Mental ~ Strong decision making, interpersonal and organizational skills are required. Incumbent must utilize multi-tasking, teamwork, creativity, customer service, discretion, mentoring, problem analysis, and training/supervising skills on a frequent to continual basis. Occasional negotiating, selling, and teaching or training is also required.

Incumbent must read, speak, write, and understand English. S/he must be able to perform basic math to calculate margin and discounts, to control inventory and to set prices. Requires frequent independent judgment and/or independent action.


Physical ~ Frequent physical activities are standing, walking, talking, reaching, repetitive wrist/hand/feet motion, bending, sitting, hearing, and handling. Requires maneuvering in tight areas. Occasional activities are feeling, grasping, stooping, and climbing. There is frequent lifting, and carrying involved in the position. Incumbent must be able to lift up to 50 pounds consistently and safely. May work over 40 hours per week.


Job Conditions The position requires substantial overtime, heavy lifting, constant standing, extensive close work, work in refrigerated areas (varying temperature zones: freezer, walk-in, department), slick/hard surface floors, corrosive chemicals, and work with CRTs.


Education/Experience Associate degree or equivalent experience specializing in Butchery required; restaurant/cooking experiencing is a plus.  Position requires in-depth knowledge of retail grocery industry, in addition to trends, local and national suppliers, and efficient product merchandising to successfully perform job functions. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications is helpful.  Experience should include natural foods buying and at least 2-5 years in management/supervisory position.  Food Handlers Card required.
