The General Manager thinks conceptually, imaginatively and systematically about success and shall lead SLO Natural Foods Coop to achieve its Goals and Objectives as developed in cooperation with the Board of Directors.

The General Manager (GM) shall report to the Board of Directors as directed by the Board. The General Manager has the authority to hire and direct all other staff.

Supervises: Financial Manager, Operations Manager and Marketing staff/consultants.


  • Develop and recommend to the Board of Directors both long-range and short-range plans to ensure the sustainability and growth of the Coop.
  • Prepare Operating and Capital Budgets reflecting the long- and short-range plans of the Coop, subject to approval by the Board of Directors.
  • Direct the Financial Operations of the Coop; review reports of the Financial Manager; present said reports to the Board and regular and special Board and Owner/Member meetings. Ensure a profitable, growing business.
  • Analyze and review all business opportunities; recommend potential options to the Board of Directors on Expansion, Relocation and Acquisition; conduct negotiations related to said options.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Board of Directors.
  • Represent the Coop and participate in regional and national Coop events.


  • Maintain knowledge of natural foods retail and industry trends.
  • Maintain excellent relations with wholesale distributors, local business operators, and industry leaders, i.e. National Co-op Grocers (NCG).
  • Working with Operations Manager, maintain, improve and enlarge a product mix the meets the needs of Coop Owner/Members and non-Members.
  • Maintain and improve a price/margin strategy to remain price competitive with the local marketplace while maintaining profit for growth.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws—licenses, permits, health regulations, and employment laws.
  • Facilities oversight to include planning for preventative maintenance, capital replacement schedule for equipment, and day to day facilities needs.


  • Understand and oversee compliance with Co-op Personnel Policies and Update as needed.
  • Hire, supervise and evaluate management staff.
  • Develop Staff organization in cooperation with Operations Manager to fairly distribute work and maintain optimum service to all customers.
  • Meet with Department heads to Prepare annual payroll budget within operational budget constraints.
  • Ensure a safe and healthy workplace for all employees.
  • Ensure excellent training of all Staff.


  • Work with the Coop Marketing personnel to develop and implement an advertising and marketing strategy to increase public awareness of the Coop and its products and services.
  • Coordinate with appropriate Staff to communicate with and provide Member/Owners current information about the Coop business through newsletter, social media, regular and annual reports and other options the GM may decide is effective.




  • Minimum of three years of retail grocery management experience.
  • Natural or organic grocery experience is preferred.
  • Supervisory experience, including: hiring, training, evaluating and coaching, setting compensation, and termination.
  • Financial experience is also preferred, including: operating, capital, and cash budgeting; interpreting and analyzing financial statements, and accounting ratios, etc.
  • Knowledge of store point of sales systems and have strong computer skills.

  • Self-motivated: Does not require constant oversight, proactively identifies opportunities and challenges
