The Opportunity

La Montañita Coop Food Market has been a national leader among cooperative groceries for more than 40 years.  New Mexico’s largest community owned natural foods market, La Montañita ranks fourth among coop groceries nationally, with annual sales exceeding $44 M.  Based in Albuquerque, the Co-op has a strong, committed staff, 16,000 member households, and working relationships with local farmers, ranchers, and food artisans whose products are sold through the Co-op.  La Montañita is now seeking a General Manager who is committed to steering this member-owned business with a collaborative culture, a commitment to natural, organic, and local foods and products, and to a healthy environment and food system in New Mexico. Co-op operations are carried out by the 300-member staff, led by the General Manager.  The organization functions largely through three broad divisions, including the Co-op’s five full-service retail stores, the central administrative Support Office, and the Cooperative Distribution Center which services more than 250 companies and organizations beyond its own outlets.

The General Manager (GM) is the chief staff executive for the organization. S/he effects the vision and mission of La Montañita for the benefit of the members and the community, as articulated by the goals and vision set by the Board of Directors. The GM is responsible for organizational management and overall operations, hiring and supervising staff, supporting the Board and its committees, and supervising consultants, when necessary, as well as advancing the organization’s utilization of cooperative principles as central components of La Montanita’s growth plans.

 

Qualifications

 

  • At least 5-8 years of experience leading a large, complex organization (i.e. 300+ employees, 7 sites)
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Management or related field, or commensurate experience
  • Ethical retail food management experience in a multi-store environment, with oversight of multiple functions (i.e. HR, Finance, Marketing, IT, Operations)
  • Demonstrated broad knowledge of and commitment to principles of cooperative organizational structure
  • Demonstrated strong strategic planning and financial analytical skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability and willingness to listen
  • Experience reporting to and working collaboratively with a Board of Directors 
  • Strong record of team building, including an effective management team and Board
  • Clear commitment to La Montañita’s mission of providing quality organic, natural, and local food to coop members and to the larger community
  • Strong leadership and personnel management skills
  • Strong and inspirational communication skills to articulate a clear vision for the Co-op, mobilizing stakeholders around that shared vision
  • A collaborative personal style that works in partnership with others, including members, staff, suppliers and other external partners
