Grocery Manager- Full Time

Are you dedicated to the growth of your team and department?  Do you love sourcing new products?  Are you an organic foodie?  Do you enjoy training your team to success?  Are you familiar with Gluten Free and Vegan products?  Do you believe in shopping local?  Are you an experienced grocery manager?  If so, we may have the right position for you!  Our co-op is currently looking for a Grocery Manager for our busy customer focused grocery department.  In this position you will:  Manage all operations and employees in our grocery departments which include Frozen, Dairy, Packaged Goods, Bulk, Wellness, Bread, and Beer & Wine and Provide PIC (person-in-charge) shared store coverage.  The ideal candidate will have grocery management experience - preferably in a co-op environment. This experience should include hiring, training, leading, scheduling and supervising staff. Candidates should have ordering, pricing, receiving and inventory management experience. Communication, vendor relation, organization skills and a sense of humor are required. Natural and organics knowledge is preferred.  Schedule is Tuesday through Saturday with varying hours.

Customer Service

It is the primary responsibility of every employee of the Co-op to serve our members and customers with a superior shopping experience by using excellent customer service skills. This includes, but is not limited to, friendly, helpful interactions with members and customers, a willingness to assist all customers and members find the items they are looking for no matter where they may be in the store, and to explain store policies and procedures clearly, completely and concisely to customers. Employees should also report customer suggestions, comments and complaints to appropriate management and/or to document such in a Customer Feedback Form. 

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Participate in Management Team responsibilities as designated, such as policy development and other team coverage as needed
  • Participate in Person in Charge shifts as assigned
  • Hire qualified applicants following established policy
  • Ensure on-the-job training using training checklists; update checklists as appropriate
  • Conduct performance evaluations on a timely basis
  • Recommend pay increases within department budget
  • Take disciplinary action as needed following established policy
  • Schedule hours for department within budget
  • Review and approve time sheets on a timely basis
  • Organize and facilitate department meetings to create goals and action plans to address opportunities
  • Keep staff informed of storewide development, news, meetings and policy changes
  • Organize and maintain departmental communication system that encourages staff participation
  • Periodically review orders with buyers to ensure adequate product and minimize losses

Department Operations

  • Oversee buyers to minimize out-of-stocks and overstocks and to maximize sales and turnover
  • Evaluate turns quarterly by pulling item movement reports of best sellers and slow movers and adjust assortment accordinglyMaintain overall balance of number of SKUs to space available
  • Ensure proper receiving by department staff according to established procedures
  • Review invoices for pricing and discount accuracy
  • Ensure accurate coding and up-to-date shelf tags
  • Set pricing to meet margin goals; mark-down items as needed to reduce losses
  • Coordinate regular price surveys of identified competitors to maintain competitive prices
  • Coordinate inventory counts
  • Ensure that credit is received from suppliers where applicable for returned or low quality product
  • Manage the contract relationship with our largest supplier, UNFI, by negotiating transportation, growing and maintaining our relationship with our sales reps
  • Attend producer tours and visit other local producers
  • Participate in setting sales and margin goals for Grocery departments
    Review financial reports of department performance; take corrective action as needed to meet goals
    Attend meetings as required


  • Attend merchandising meetings with other department managers and buyers to plan promotions and storewide merchandising
  • Build end caps and other special displays, and set standards for all displays
  • Coordinate in-store and Co-op deals promotions in the Grocery departments
  • Visit other stores for ideas on promotions, product lines and displays
  • Ensure adequate product levels for displays, sale items, coolers and regular stocked items
  • Ensure proper shelf tags and sale signs are on shelves and displays
  • Ensure accurate, up-to-date price, ingredient, and date labeling of items
  • Attend trade shows as assigned
  • Review movement reports to analyze overall category management, recommend and make set changes to ensure the best selection, sales and inventory management. 
  • Plan attractive displays with uniform signage; ensure displays are fully stocked, rotated, and fronted to ensure freshness and abundance
  • Create several innovative ideas for merchandising at the Co-op
  • Employ category management throughout the department to ensure we have the right product mix, placed appropriately on the shelf, at the right price with the right promotions support


  • Negotiate with suppliers for favorable prices, terms, quality, and delivery
  • Assure compliance with all purchasing contracts
  • Research new products, rotate varieties seasonally
  • Research new or alternative sources of supply
  • Adhere to all product merchandising policies and notify vendors of policies when purchasing new products
  • Purchase product to follow the Co-op guidelines (e.g., priority for local and organic products)
  • Work with buyers on updating UPCs, PLUs and pricing information in the POS register system
  • Ensure all new items are added into POS before they are put on shelf
  • Maintain level of high quality products; maintain a sufficient amount of inventory, with limited out-of-stock items to maximize sales and turnover

Department Maintenance

  • Ensure work area, shelves, coolers, equipment  and display areas are maintained in sanitary, orderly condition meeting or exceeding health department standards
  • Follow USDA and NH State Law regarding the use, labeling, and handling of allergens
  • Follow standard Sanitation Operating Procedures schedule including: deep cleaning schedules, good health department scores, pest awareness and control, equipment maintenance
  • Ensure proper storage and labeling procedures as per health department and organic standards
  • Ensure adequate amounts of department supplies
  • Maintain department equipment in working order; notify management of problems or requirements
  • Research and recommend major equipment repair, replacement, or acquisitions
  • Follow and update opening and closing checklists
  • Monitor temperatures in cooler and cases

Mathematical Skills

  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Perform these operations using units of American money, weight measurement and volume
  • Ability to read financial statements or at least a firm grasp of margin and pricing

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Familiarity and knowledge of current trends in the natural foods industry
  • Experience serving the public
  • At least one year of purchasing and merchandising, preferably for a grocery department in a natural food store
  • Supervisory experience: hiring, training, evaluating, giving directions
  • Several innovative ideas for merchandising at the Co-op

Work Environment

  • Noise level is moderate
  • Some time spent in walk-in freezer and cooler and stocking the refrigerated cases and freezers
  • Will be required to use step stools, step ladders, box cutters and pricing tools
