Marketing Manager

Purpose

The Seward Co-op Marketing Manager is responsible for all marketing systems that will empower the Seward Co-op’s management and staff to effectively tell the Seward Co-op story. This position leads the Marketing Department. The Marketing Manager will serve the co-op by planning, organizing and evaluating Marketing Department operations and managing Marketing Department staff and vendor relationships.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead the Marketing Department to effectively convey the Seward Co-op brand to all potential audiences.
  • Co-lead, with the Merchandising Manager, the Merch-Marketing and the Brand Team.
  • Participate in the Governance, Coordination and Communication Teams. Provide framing and write agenda items as needed.
  • Work with General Manager and Finance Manager to develop and oversee marketing budgets.

Marketing and Communications

  • Work with Merchandising Manager to tell the story of Seward Co-op through coordinated merchandising and marketing efforts, co-op-wide events, retail signage, social media, promotional materials and co-op décor for all locations, both internally and externally, including the Creamery Café.
  • Foster a positive Seward Co-op brand image through continued evolution of Seward icons.
  • Coordinate and place advertising in various mediums, including print, electronic and social media.
  • Create and maintain co-op informational materials for use in promotions, advertising, communications and media relations.
  • Act as media spokesperson and build media relationships to tell the co-op’s story.
  • Coordinate public relations efforts on behalf of the co-op, including oversite of contract and communications with public relations firm(s).
  • Supervise development and promotion of education program.
  • Support Diversity and Community Engagement Manager in outreach efforts.
  • Oversee co-op-sponsored community events, as needed.
  • Supervise distribution of co-op donation and sponsorship programs, ensuring alignment with the co-op’s Ends.

Department Management and Employee Relations

  • Recruit, hire, train and manage qualified Marketing Department staff in accordance with established policy.
  • Ensure Marketing Department staff are scheduled to meet cooperative needs.
  • Follow and enforce performance standards for Marketing Department staff.
  • Complete timely and thoughtful evaluations of peers and staff.
  • Communicate co-op-wide information to Marketing Department staff.
  • Model efficient and friendly customer service with both internal and external customers.

Ownership Services

  • Develop plans to extend member-owner programs to new audiences.
  • Oversee design, editing, production and distribution of the quarterly newsletter Sprout!  and the biweekly e-newsletter.
  • Facilitate member-owner/shopper surveys.
  • Edit, publish and distribute the Scorecard/Annual Report.
  • Ensure that quarterly Scorecard is updated on the website.
  • Work with IT and Finance on coordination of patronage refund distribution.
  • Coordinate the board of directors’ election with Finance, IT and the Advocacy and Governance Specialist.
  • Assist in planning and direction of Annual Owner Meeting.
  • Plan and direct annual Community-Supported Agriculture fair.

Other Tasks as Assigned by General Manager

  • Participate on other teams as needed or as determined by the General Manager.
  • Attend conferences, trainings and industry events, and assist other co-ops as appropriate. Network with NCG peers to share and collaborate on best practices.
  • Provide support and data to the General Manager for monitoring reports required by the board of directors.
  • Perform other tasks assigned by General Manager.
  • Attend and participate in board meetings at the request of the General Manager.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Ability to develop and implement systems in support of Marketing Department, Brand Team and co-op-wide goals.
  • Capacity for decision making, Including ability to organize, prioritize and delegate multiple, at times competing, demands.
  • Excellent leadership—ability to inspire and motivate outstanding performance in others.
  • Experience in facilitating group processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong communication skills in the English language that include being able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Ability to edit the writing of others using AP style. Ability to communicate technical information to nontechnical audiences.
  • Computer literacy and proficiency with appropriate programs and technologies for Marketing Manager.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Regular, predictable attendance.
  • Willingness and ability to meet the changing requirements of the position.
  • Must have valid driver’s license on file if driving between locations for support.
  • Must provide own vehicle for travel between locations.
  • Ability to interpret financial statements, develop budgets and meet financial goals.

Functional

  • Ability to sit or stand and work at a computer for extended periods of time per shift.
  • Repetitive use of hands for grasping, pushing, pulling and fine manipulation.
  • Ability to do math computations, including addition, subtraction, division, fractions, decimals and percentages.

Preferred

  • Knowledge of cooperatives.
  • Knowledge of the restaurant, natural foods and/or grocery industry.
  • Multilingualism a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with customers and co-workers from various cultural backgrounds.
