Merchandising Manager



 The Merchandising Manager is responsible for all merchandising systems of the Seward Co-op. The position is responsible for maintaining and enhancing Seward Co-op’s brand through the products we sell. This position leads the Merchandising Department and reports to the General Manager. The Merchandising Manager will serve the Co-op by planning, organizing, and evaluating Merchandising Department operations and managing merchandising staff and vendor relationships.


Primary Responsibilities:


  • Co-lead with the Marketing Manager the Merch-Marketing and the Brand Team
  • Participate in the Governance, Coordination, and Technology Teams. Participate in project teams on case by case basis. Provide framing and complete agenda items as needed
  • Work with General Manager and Finance Manager to develop and oversee merchandising budgets



  • Provide vision and leadership in the creation and maintenance of unique, welcoming and attractive retail shopping environments  
  • Oversee the Merchandising Coordinators and the merchandising department
  • Ensure effective delivery of services to co-op business units
  • Oversee co-op wide category management, pricing, promotions, and visual merchandising 
  • Work with the Operations Manager and Business Unit Managers to ensure synergy of co-op and store merchandising and operational goals
  • Work with the Marketing Manager to tell the story of Seward Co-op through coordinated merchandising and marketing efforts including co-op events, signage, décor, sales materials, social media, the Sprout! newsletter and other brand programs 
  • Oversee the development and implementation of merchandising strategies and promotions planning and implementation
  • Facilitate teamwork across sales departments and business units to achieve merchandising objectives
  • Develop and maintain systems and tools that support merchandising objectives
  • Develop and maintain co-op product standards
  • Oversee the negotiation of co-op purchasing and promotional contracts and ensure compliance with established contracts
  • Develop pricing strategy to achieve co-op objectives including margin goals and competitive price image.  Administer the Market Basket price audit process
  • Oversee store floor plans and category layouts.  Manage display areas and facilitate major resets
  • Manage merchandising expense budget and oversee the selection of fixtures and décor
  • Determine product departments, sub-depts., and categories


Department Management and Employee Relations

  • Recruit, hire, train and manage qualified Merchandising Department staff following established policy
  • Ensure that Merchandising Department staff are scheduled to meet cooperative needs.
  • Follow and enforce performance standards for Merchandising Department staff
  • Communicate co-op wide information to Merchandising Department staff
  • Ensure that merchandising information is communicated effectively to stakeholders throughout the co-op
  • Ensure all cyclical tasks assigned to merchandising staff are carried out regularly.
  • Model efficient and friendly customer service throughout with both internal and external customers
  • Provide staff with merchandising training, tools, and resources


Other Tasks as Assigned by General Manager

  • Participate on other teams as needed or as determined by the General Manager
  • Support strategic effort to diversify our supply chain
  • Attend conferences, trainings and industry events and assist other co-ops as appropriate
  • Network with NCG peers to share and collaborate on best practices
  • Provide support and data to the General Manager for monitoring reports required by the board of directors
  • Perform other tasks assigned by General Manager
  • Attend and participate in board meetings at the request of the General Manager





  • Knowledge of the natural foods, grocery, restaurant or other food industry.
  • Experience managing products, promotions, and displays
  • Ability to develop and implement systems in support of Merchandising Department, Brand Team and co-op wide goals
  • Capacity for decision making. Including ability to organize, prioritize, and delegate multiple and sometimes competing demands
  • Excellent leadership – ability to inspire and motivate excellent performance in others
  • Experience in facilitating group process
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in team environment
  • Strong communication skills in the English language that include being able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.  Ability to communicate technical information to nontechnical audiences
  • Computer literacy and proficiency with appropriate programs and technologies for Merchandising Manager
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Regular, predictable attendance
  • Willingness and ability to meet the changing requirements of the position
  • Must have valid driver’s license on file if driving between locations for support
  • Must provide own vehicle for travel between locations
  • Ability to interpret financial statements, develop budgets and meet financial goals



  • Ability to sit and work on a computer for extended periods of time per shift
  • Repetitive use of hands for grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to do math computations including addition, subtraction, division, fractions, decimals and percentages



  • Experience in visual arts and/or Merchandising.
  • Knowledge of cooperatives.
  • Knowledge of the restaurant, natural foods and/or grocery industry.
  • Multilingual a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to work with customers and co-workers from various cultural backgrounds
