POSITION: Refrigerated Foods Buyer

GENERAL: The job of the Refrigerated Foods Buyer is to ensure product variety and values that satisfy TPSS customers, to merchandise products effectively, to manage inventory levels, to set pricing to meet departmental margin goals, and to oversee the daily operation of the department.

PURPOSE: To select, purchase, price and display refrigerated items and meet objectives for sales, margin, labor and customer service.

REPORTS TO: Store Manager.



a) Negotiate with suppliers for favorable prices, terms, quality, & delivery.

b) Purchase refrigerated items following store policies (e.g., priority for biodynamic, organic, local & regional).

c) Research new or alternative sources of supply. Develop relationships with local processors.

d) Receive orders not handled by Receiver, following established procedures. Obtain credit from vendors where not handled by Receiver.

e) Ensure accurate, up-to-date PLU's. Enter new products and price changes promptly and accurately into POS system in conjunction with POS coordinator.

f) Evaluate turns by pulling item movement reports of best sellers and slow movers, and adjust product assortment accordingly. Maintain overall balance of number of SKU’s to space available.

g) Review invoices for accuracy and pass to finance office for payment.

h) Coordinate returns and obtain credit from suppliers where applicable.


a) Plan and maintain attractive, fully stocked, rotated and faced department.

b) Ensure accurate, uniform, up-to-date department signs as needed.

c) Ensure displays are replenished, rotated, culled as needed.

d) Price items to achieve margin and sales goals, while maintaining a competitive image.

e) Assist customers with refrigerated food questions and special orders.


a) Ensure inventory physical & cycle counts are implemented in accordance with standard operational procedures.

b) Participate in setting sales and margin goals for department.

c) Review departmental financial reports (sales, labor, margin, turns), with Purchasing Manager and take corrective action as needed.

d) Attend department and storewide meetings.

e) Perform other tasks assigned by Store Manager.


• Experience in refrigerated department.

• Knowledge of organic practices and certification regulations.

• Firm grasp of margin pricing.

• Communications skills--good listener, clear instructions.

• Demonstrated ability to handle multiple demands.

• Regular, predictable attendance.

• Ability to lift 50 lbs.

• Willingness and ability to learn and grow to meet the changing requirements of the job.


• Experience purchasing retail natural foods.

• Knowledge of trends in natural foods industry.

• Familiarity with department products.
