The Richmond Food Co-op (RFC) seeks an experienced and innovative leader for the position of General Manager. 

 RFC will be a full service, member-owned, equal opportunity grocery store focused on local, sustainable and affordable food options. The position is expected to start in August, 2017 as the 4500 square foot (retail space) Westover Hills store is anticipated to open in November.

 Reporting to the Board of Directors, the GM is responsible for the leadership and management of this start-up retail grocery operation. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Work with the Board of Directors to regularly update operational and capital budgets and plans.
  • Oversee store opening including managing project consultants and hiring and training staff.
  • Develop, implement, and manage merchandising and marketing strategies to meet the needs of the membership and the broader community.
  • Oversee all store operations including financial, member management, customer service, and human resources.
  • Represent the Co-op in vendor relationships, contract development, and community outreach.
  • Set goals and take tangible actions to make the Co-op an inclusive, active community institution.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience in retail grocery management.
  • Demonstrated financial skills, including developing and monitoring budgets.
  • Ability to develop, articulate, and implement a vision and strategy.
  • Experience hiring, training, motivating and leading diverse staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to build positive relationships in the supply chain and community.
  • Commitment to and passion for cooperative values and principles.
  • Proven merchandising and marketing abilities.
  • Willingness to present ideas to and take direction from a board.

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (Business degree preferred)
  • Experience in the natural foods sector.
  • Retail experience in cooperative or not-for-profit environment.
  • Experience opening or expanding a retail store or department.
