Co-op Operations Manager




The Seward Co-op Operations Manager is responsible for the operational outcomes of all business units of the co-op. This position will support and be guided by Seward Co-op’s high level goals while maintaining and shaping co-op wide systems that will empower the co-op’s management and staff to be efficient and effective in serving the needs of our community.  The Co-op Operations Manager will serve the co-op by continually improving operations of the business by planning, organizing, and evaluating organizational structure and managing staff and vendor relationships.


Status: Full-time. Salaried, Reports to the General Manager. Direct reports include Store Managers, Production Manager, Café Manager, Facilities Manager and Flow of Goods Manager.


Pay Level: VIII




Primary Responsibilities

  • Seek solutions that use resources effectively to improve the cooperative experience for all.
  • Lead the Operations team and form and lead advisory project teams as needed in order to build alignment for projects and initiatives throughout the co-op.
  • Participate in the Coordination, Governance, Policy, Communication, Technology and other teams. Provide framing and complete agenda items and present operational perspectives.
  • Work with Finance Manager to develop and oversee operating budgets to accomplish sales department, operations and co-op wide goals.
  • Strive for a balance between transparency, security and maintaining confidentiality with regards to personnel issues and the co-op’s strategic plans and priorities.
  • Fulfill responsibilities of the General Manager in the event an emergency succession.
  • Act as the lead employee of the co-op in the event the GM is absent.


Department Management and Employee Relations

  • Model supportive and participatory leadership; build teamwork and motivate staff to accomplish cooperative goals and realize the Ends.
  • Act as the key co-op management representative with our employee’s union (UFCW Local 653) when it comes to operational matters.
  • Ensure a fair and safe work place for all staff consistent with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Employee Handbook and the goal of being a progressive workplace.
  • Apprise the general manager of major personnel issues that arise with operational staff.
  • Recruit, hire and train qualified staff following established policy.
  • Determine pay rates for direct reports within department budget and co-op pay scale.
  • Complete timely and thoughtful evaluations of peers and staff.


Co-op Wide Operational Duties

  • Model efficient and friendly customer service throughout co-op.
  • Ensure storewide safety standards and timely response to safety committee issues.
  • Develop and maintain emergency procedures co-op wide.
  • Ensure that co-op properties are maintained in clean, working order.
  • Maintain all required regulatory licenses and act as point of contact for regulatory agencies.
  • Work with Finance Manager to provide Seward Co-op with adequate liability, workers compensation, directors and officers, and other appropriate insurance policies.
  • Manage key vendor relationships as required or requested
  • Ensure the protection of co-op assets from theft and other malicious intent.


Brand Pod Support

  • Support Merchandising Manager to realize the Co-op’s merchandising vision.
  • Support Marketing Manager in implementing marketing initiatives.
  • Act as media representative as requested.
  • Schedule and lead Operations and Brand Walk-throughs of all co-op retail locations on a quarterly basis


Other tasks as assigned by General Manager

  • Support the Seward Co-op Scorecard through initiatives and providing data as needed.
  • Attend conferences, trainings and industry events and assist other co-ops as appropriate. Network with NCG peers to share and collaborate on best practices.
  • Provide support and data to the General Manager for monitoring reports required by the board of directors.
  • Provide a written Operations update to the General Manager for the monthly board of directors meeting
  • Attend and participate in board meetings at the request of the General Manager.
  • Perform other tasks assigned by General Manager.

  • Willingness and ability to meet the changing requirements of the position.
  • Must have valid driver’s license on file if driving between locations for support.
  • Management, supervisory or leadership experience in retail or a co-operative business environment
  • Ability to interpret financial statements, develop budgets and meet financial goals.




  • Ability to sit and work on a computer for extended periods of time per shift
  • Repetitive use of hands for grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation
  • Ability to do math computations including addition, subtraction, division, fractions, decimals and percentages



  • Knowledge of the natural foods or grocery industry.
  • Knowledge of the restaurant industry.
  • Familiarity with production and wholesaling of product.
  • Multilingual a plus
