Lakewinds Food Co-op is looking for an experienced, energetic and organized individual to ensure smooth daily store operations, day to day supervision of department managers and a well maintained store appearance.  Will ensure fairness and equity for policy adherence. Must create a positive work environment and develop pro-active work relationships, responsible for meeting store goals for sales, margins, labor and customer service.   Will serve as primary communicator to employees within the store. 

Five years grocery store management experience required.

STORE MANAGER     Job Description                                            

PURPOSE: To ensure smooth daily store operations, day to day supervision of department managers and a well maintained store appearance.  Work with all direct reports to ensure fairness and equity for policy adherence. Creates a positive work environment and develops pro-active work relationships with direct reports to meet store goals for sales, margins, labor and customer service.   Serve as primary communicator to employees within the store. 

REPORTS TO: Sr. Operations Manager

SUPERVISES:  Deli Manager, FE Manager, Grocery Manager, Wellness Manager, Meat Manager, Produce Manager, and Housekeeping.



  • Ensure a strong management presence in the store at all times.  Monitors direct report schedules.  Review and approve direct report time-off requests. Assist in succession planning activities for department managers.
  • Complete, deliver and follow-up on direct report performance evaluations.  Make recommendations to Human Resources Manager for compensation adjustments.
  • Ensure and attend regular department meetings in assigned departments.
  • Coordinate/ensure storewide communications for the inter-department and storewide projects which include department resets.
  • Ensure cooperation between departments.
  • Ensure that store is appropriately staffed at all times.
  • Participate in quarterly inventories, coordinate a plan prior to execution.
  • Supervise significant personnel actions in the assigned departments in compliance with applicable State and Federal laws, and store policy.  Consult with Human Resources to ensure consistency.
  • Work with Human Resources to interview and hire Dept. Managers as needed.
  • Work with Human Resources and Dept. Managers to ensure orientation, store tours and trainings of new employees.
  • Attend bi-weekly leadership team meetings. Communicate appropriate total store information when necessary.
  • Act as store liaison with vendors and outside representatives providing security, equipment and building/utility services.
  • Ensure compliance with all government regulations relative to retail operations and food handling safety.
  • Promote and comply with safety standards and OSHA regulations.  Participate in quarterly Safety Committee meetings.
  • Provide efficient, informative and friendly service according to established customer service standards.
  • Other duties as directed by the General Manager.


  • Participate in development of the annual operating budgets for all store departments. Instruct, monitor and adjust with departmental managers budget adherence.
  • Monitor deviations from the budget, take corrective action and report action taken to General Manager.


    • Oversee housekeeping staff in maintaining store grounds in clean, orderly condition, meeting health department standards.
    • Coordinate major department cleaning projects with department managers and develop routine cleaning schedules.
    • Ensure waste stream management procedures are practiced by housekeepers and all departments.
    • Maintain adequate store cleaning supplies and equipment.
    • Contract with and oversee cleaning, snow removal, security and pest control services and other related services as requested by Store Manager and General Manager.
    • Maintain other store systems (lighting, air conditioning, refrigeration units, etc.)


    • 5 year minimum of retail store management experience.
    • Supervisory experience: hiring, training, motivating, scheduling, goal setting.
    • Ability to read financial statements: experience in establishing margins and pricing.
    • Ability to plan, develop, execute and assess efficient retail operational systems and procedures.
    • Knowledge of and experience with category management.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently and exercise independent judgment.
    • Demonstrated objectivity, neutrality and calmness under pressure.
    • Organized; consistently follows through on commitments.
    • Knowledge of current trends in natural foods industry.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to provide clear directions.
    • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
    • Ability to sit, stand, lift up to 50 lbs.
    • Valid driver’s license.


    • Ability to communicate effectively with vendors, brokers, coworkers and customers.
    • Ability to read, count and write, to accurately complete all documentation
    • Ability to do math computations to figure margins, including addition, subtraction, division, fractions, decimals and percentages.
    • Ability to freely access all areas of the store including offices, selling floor, stock areas, and walk-in coolers and freezers.
    • Ability to travel to multiple work locations.
    • Ability to operate office equipment – including telephone, fax, computer, handheld units, and peripherals – repeatedly and for prolonged periods
    • Ability to move or handle merchandise throughout the store generally weighing up to 50 pounds.
    • Ability to perform the following movements – used in checking stock levels – repeatedly and for sustained periods: walking, standing, bending, stooping, and reaching.
    • Ability to work varied hours and days.
