Board of Directors Compensation

Food co-ops often compensate their elected directors. In some co-ops, that compensation is limited to a standard discount on purchases from the co-op. In many other co-ops a stipend is offered in addition to a purchase discount and usually requires attendance and participation in board activities.  These stipends are often higher for the board President.

Linked at the bottom of this page is a 1986 article, "Director Compensation: A Review of Practices," by Karen Zimbelman and Margaret Goldstein, based on surveys and articles reviewing cooperative practices around director compensation; it is linked below under Related Content.

Today, food co-op stipends for directors (in addition to purchase discounts) range from zero to several thousand dollars per year.
