People's Food Co-op (La Crosse, WI, and Rochester, MN)

PFC LaCrosse

People's Food Co-op was born from a buying club founded in 1973. Initially operating from a basement of a house, the club evolved into a small store. In the late 70s the co-op moved into a bigger location on La Crosse's Southside. Sales continued to grow steadily, and with the growth came a number of expansions and relocations. The co-op moved into its current downtown location in 1993 and at the time added a deli, bakery, fresh meats, and beer and wine department.

The co-op's success demanded, yet again, more space. This time, however, instead of relocating, the co-op embarked on an ambitious expansion project. The store reopened in November 2004 with 12,000 square feet of retail space. Along with improved selection, more checkout lanes, wider aisles, a brand new customer service desk, and many other practical and aesthetic improvements, the co-op also added a full-service restaurant, Hackberry's, on the second floor of the building.

The co-op offers local, organic and conventional produce, salad bar, full bakery and deli with a coffee bar and a deli seating area with a 'hot spot', grab-and-go foods, local meats and fresh fish and seafood, bulk grains, nuts and spices. Our nonfood products included a wellness department, floral, books and housewares, beer and wine, and much more.

In 2011, People's Food Co-op of La Crosse merged with the Good Food Store of Rochester, Minnesota. The new People's Food Co-op of Rochester will open a new store in downtown Rochester in the fall of 2013. Today, the People's Food Co-op is comprised of more than 6000 member households. Our mission is to promote community, grow a loyal and thriving membership, and establish ourselves as the best fresh food market in the country.

PFC Rochester

The original Rochester food co-op was founded in 1975 by a core group of organizers who met in the Rochester Public Library. The first location was on Third Avenue and was mainly a bulk foods store that was built with member investments and the proceeds of numerous bake sales and rummage sales. The organization faced a major test when a flood wiped out the store and its entire inventory on July 4, 1978. But, with tenacity that would serve them well in the years to come, they rebuilt the store with labor and commitment of their members.

Today's People's Food Co-op in Rochester was created by a merger between the La Crosse, WI and Rochester co-ops that was official on January 2, 2012. Since that time work has been underway to create today's home for the co-op in downtown Rochester. As part of a multi-use development project aimed at strengthening Rochester's  "urban village" PFC provides a much needed full service grocery store in the heart of this fast growing city. Located at street level within Metropolitan Marketplace, PFC resides only three blocks south of the world renowned Mayo Clinic. Our focus on great food, health and consumer engagement is an excellent complement to the driving force of "Med City."

Shoppers will find a broad range of products and services from prepared foods, coffee bar and large eat-in dining room to the best selection of produce focusing on a mix of local, organic and great quality at a reasonable value. Our own in-house butchers provide high quality local, grass fed beef as well as local pork and chicken and time saving ready-to-cook items that can go right from the store to the grill or the oven. Shoppers with every kind of budget will find the staples their family needs. PFC accepts WIC and SNAP.
